Peavine Falls Area
This area is accessible via numerous trails (green, white, or blue) and the Peavine Falls Gravel Road, which is a long three mile drive from where the paved road to the park office ends. There is a pavilion and a telephone at the parking lot. Peavine Falls is just a short distance from the trailhead, and is nice if it is flowing (which it often isn't). Getting to the bottom of the falls is a more difficult prospect. The best way seems to be to go to the left side of the falls, and head down the bank there. It is steep and requires some scrambling, but safe enough if you are careful. From the bottom in the winter it is possible to follow the stream down through the ravine. This is real bushwhacking, and quite difficult, but it is a neat area and worth it if you are in for the adventure. Eventually the creak comes out to a flat area and settles down, from here you can head back up the east side of the ravine. You will see a little covered pavilion at the top of a nice sized cliff. The pavilion is fairly new and a surprise for where it is located. Stop for a rest there, and to look out on the ravine from the top. There is a trail from the pavilion about half a mile back to the blue trail. This little bushwhack is difficult but gets a four star rating.
Once you are done exploring the falls ravine, you can explore some rock outcroppings near the parking lot. Follow a half-trail back behind the pavilion at the parking lot with the telephone. You soon get to some large rocks, and boulders, about 20 to 30 feet high. It is a neat place for lunch, or a little rock climbing, although not developed for climbing it does have some potential. This is an interesting sidetrack that gets three stars.
