The more time you spend in the wilderness the more strongly you will come to feel that it must be protected. I support the Nature Conservancy protects the environment by buying sensitive tracts of land, and other land management techniques. While all types of activism are important, I believe this approach to be particularly effective. Also, the conservancy makes good use of your money approximately 85% of which goes directly to programs to protect the environment.
Another way to support the environment more generally will actually make you money. If you own mutual funds or have an IRA you direct there are now a wide selection of mutual funds that support companies with positive environmental and human rights records. The success of these funds demonstrates that protecting the environment not just good moral behavior, but also makes good fiscal sense. In the long run respecting one's employees and respecting natural resources leads to a better company with positive returns for share-holders. Many of these mutual funds are ranked as 4 or 5 star funds by
Morningstar and rank near the top of their categories. I invest in the Domini Social Equity Fund (DSEFX), Citizens Global Equity Fund (WAGEX), Dreyfus Third Century (DRTHX), and Pax World Fund (PAXWX).
Social Funds, providing resources for responsible investing.
