Parker falls

Parker falls

Postby Uncle Wayne » Wed Jan 25, 2006 8:32 am

My wife and I hiked in to Parker Falls yesterday, (1-24-06) and after the 1.5 inches of rain the previous day, the falls was in full force and beautiful. If you've never seen Parker Falls you need to especially after a rain of 1 inch or more. Didn't see any hog sign this trip but they are still around without a doubt. Lots of coyote scat along the trail would probably mean a loud serenade during the night while in camp.

The water level at the Sipsey Recreation area was just over 4 at 3 p.m.

One downside to my trip is I fell in Parker Creek below the falls and broke my camera. Bummer. My wife says at my advanced age, 52, I've got to stop acting like I'm 21 again. Now where does it say that in the rule book?

This is a beautiful time of year to be in the Sispey Wilderness.

That is a beautiful area. I have never seen it after a rain though. Sorry to hear about the camera. Did your pictures survive? If so I'd like to see a picture of the falls after the rain.

Yeah, the few I took before my fall survived. I was still downstream of the falls probably 75 yards when I took the plunge. So the only one I have of the falls from this trip is at that distance.

Take a look here for some of my other shots. http://community.webshots.com/user/unclewayne_bama

Thanks for the update UW. I'm finally going to get to see Parker in early March. It's on the TT page. I think BAMA is planning on going assuming work works out.

Uncle Wayne,

You have some nice shots there. Several falls I am not familiar with. Where is Payne Creek? I don't have a map handy at work.

Does this creek feed into Little Ugly Creek? If so I was there a couple of weeks ago. What is the best route into that falls? Heading straight upstream to Cranal Rd. is a mess with downed trees.

Thanks,

Paul

Dayhiker,

I just added some Parker falls photos to the Hubbard Creek album on Webshots when you get a chance to check them out.

Paul,

Thanks. I have just added some Parker falls photos when you get a chance to visit the above web site again.
Payne Creek is actually not in the Wilderness. It's on the east side of HWY 33, north of the Sipsey River bridge a couple of miles.

No, the picture you linked does not feed into Little Ugly. It is a beautiful area that can be reached via the Trail 201 from the Randolph Trailhead. Not an easy falls to find. White Creek / Falls is a local name, the forest service / Sipsey Wilderness maps don't have a name for it.

Very nice photos. I'd been watching the Parker folder. Thanks for the tip on where they were.

White falls huh, named after kin?

After getting home and checking my photos and notes I found the falls in your picture. The last time I was over there my friend that was with me nearly fell from about where this picture was taken. He started sliding and dug in his hiking poles and bent one of them. That's a long way down with a rough landing.

Yeah, they made moonshine in the area in the "good ole days."

Wow, yeah that would have been a bad place to fall. It's a beautiful canyon but difficult to find. You probably know already but from the falls in the picture you linked it is less than a 1/2 mile to the Sipsey River.

The main one everyone knows about is above, maybe a 1/4 mile. Look at the beech trees around it. There is one with a 18?? date on it.

Thanks! We went back to Parker the next day. I did not go far enough above the falls. Is the tree you are talking about the one where it says somebody prayed to God?

No, unfortunately Hurricane Rita blew over the "Bill Tidwell Prayed to God" tree. It was below the falls. The 18?? tree is very close to the bluff shelter above the falls.
